On the evening of the first day of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit…” (John 20:19-22)
The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls Confirmation the Sacrament of the Holy Spirit, where the baptized are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and strengthened for service to the Body of Christ, called to carry on the mission of the resurrected Christ to the world, through the power of the Paraclete, who will not leave us orphans. Those who are confirmed breathe the Life of the resurrected Christ to their sisters and brothers.
At Holy Spirit Parish, the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation takes place during February of the senior year. Students and parents attend a meeting during the previous May. Students have six classes in the fall and winter of their senior year. Sponsors attend three of those classes. Celebration of the enrollment ceremony takes place during one of the Sunday liturgies in Advent. Candidates are required to have an interview and make a retreat prior to the reception of the sacrament. Contact Tim Singler with questions, 788-7655.
RCIA – Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
RCIA is the process for adults who are not baptized, those who are baptized in a different Christian denomination and baptized Catholics who seek Confirmation and Eucharist. Preparation sessions are held Sunday morning beginning in the first Sunday in October. Sessions give an in-depth overview of the Catholic Church and provide skills in scripture, prayer and Christian living. The process is enhanced by the companionship of an RCIA Team, sponsor, personal visits and support of a Catholic community. Catechumens and candidates are received into the church and celebrate the Easter sacraments at the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil. Contact Margaret Franz with questions or to register, 788-7640.
