God is Deeply in Love with Us!
Teach us to give and not count the cost. - ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA
St. Ignatius uses very few words to completely describe our Lord, Jesus Christ. Jesus gave it all. One could argue there is no greater cost than one’s life—and Jesus gave that too—for the salvation of the world. If we say we are Christians, followers of Jesus, then believe it or not, St. Ignatius is describing us, too.
Chances are if you are anything like me, you may be a giver, but you are also a counter of the cost. I think St. Ignatius gets straight to the heart of the matter—our motives.
Today, let us examine the ways we give—to our families, on our jobs, in civic organizations, at church, etc. Then let’s be brave enough to ask for the grace to shift our motives if necessary; to continue to give for all the right reasons, without concern for what it will cost.
Gracious Lord, give us a heart to see how our self-less giving helps to build up the Kingdom of God here on earth.
Jesus, I trust in you.
